Line Art Self Portrait

This is my line art project that I completed during my junior year of high school at Lincoln Lutheran. This was the fourth major project we worked on this semester and it involved using ink, pens and nibs. It was a very fun project that only took about two weeks total from start to finish. First we looked through old books and found a word that we liked or related to. My word that I choose was “JOY” from a hymnal. Then Mrs. Seitz took our pictures by the back windows where there was the greatest amount of shadow. Both the book page and photos of us were printed in black and white. Next we laid the book page over the self image page and traced the faces on using a light box underneath using pencils. Using the pencils we shaded in all the dark areas which would later help us with the ink process. Once the tracing was done, we practiced using different nibs and evaluating the types we needed for certain areas regarding the black thickness levels. Then we filled in the pencil lines with a lighter less matted ink for a practice copy and repeated the whole process using a thinker, matted ink for the final project.

I choose the word “joy” as I believe that it emulates my personality and the joy that Jesus gives me.
