Ceramic Bowl

I created this ceramic bowl in Introduction to Visual Arts my junior year of high school. We first starred the building process by cutting out an outline of the 3 dimensional shape in slabs of clay. We picked a pattern and pressed it into each four sides. I chose a chevron stripe pattern to press. Then we build our walls up by scoring and slipping the sides and connecting them. Next we smoothed out the inside, top lips and, corners. The last step before it was fired in the kiln was to pick a phrase  to embed into the bottom. I choose the Bible verse Romans 8:38 that says, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” I thought this went well with the theme of a bowl having depth and the verse talking about how neither hight no depth can ever separate us from Christ.

When it was fired I choose a speckled glaze for the inside with a main color of cream and then specks of blue, yellow and orange. Then I choose solid colors of blue and yellow for the outside alternating each wall.

I really enjoyed making this project in the fall of 2021 in Mrs. Seitz’s  4th block class along with my 14 classmates.
